Great Thursday is indeed a great day for all Christendom.  It is the anniversary of the institution of Holy Communion.  On this day, at the Last Supper, our Lord instituted the life-giving sacrament of Holy Communion.  Divine Liturgy is celebrated in commemoration of our Lord's last supper and the first Holy Communion.

26 "While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, 'Take, eat; this is my body.'  27 Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them , saying, 'Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.'" [Matthew 26:26-28]

In the evening, the dramatic ceremony of the Washing of Feet takes place in memory of our Lord's washing of the feet of his disciples in sublime humility.

During the night of Great Thursday, an extended vigil is kept, in memory of the last sleepless night of our Lord on earth.  This nocturnal service is called in Armenian khavaroom (darkness).  During the service a time comes when all the lights of the church are turned off commemorating the awful darkness which fell over the earth upon the betrayal of the one who said, "I am the light of the world."  On this night the last words of Christ are read and long, mournful church songs are sung, all aimed specifically at portraying the last sad hours of our Lord at Gethsemane and before the human law courts.
